The Schwab Enterprise Architecture (EA) team is looking for a director/principal level Enterprise Architect (Individual Contributor role). The EA team is responsible for developing and maintaining the organization’s enterprise architecture function, leading the firm’s technology strategy, ensuring architectural consistency and coherence, and managing Schwab’s Architecture & Technology Governance (ATG) framework. The ATG framework encompasses three core areas: Architecture Governance, Technology Governance, and Service Governance. These areas are governed through a combination of central and federated boards, with federated boards established within each development and engineering organization.

This role is responsible for leading the Architecture Governance function, enhancing the Architecture Governance model, driving architectural consistency, and guiding solutions to align with strategies and target state architectures. Additionally, this role oversees the Architecture Review Board and facilitates architecture review sessions.

What you are good at

  • Establishing and refining Enterprise Architecture Governance practices and Architecture & Technology Governance Frameworks
  • Leading and operating Architecture and Technology Governance Review Boards
  • Working closely with various technology delivery organizations and risk management functions to fulfill regulatory obligations
  • Using Application Platform Model, Architecture Patterns, Building Blocks, Reference architectures, Guidelines, etc. to drive consistent architecture governance outcomes across the enterprise
  • Using your extensive technical expertise and advanced architectural thinking to drive complex architecture and technology decisions that balance short-term needs with long-term goals

What you have


  • Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related discipline
  • Demonstrated experience in enterprise architecture, particularly in guiding Architecture & Technology Governance processes at the strategic, blueprint, and project level
  • Demonstrated experience in leading the architectural design and strategic direction of complex technology solution, ensuring alignment with standards and best practices.
  • Broad and deep knowledge of IT/software technology trends; domain knowledge and experience in application architecture, cloud-based application development, web services, middleware, infrastructure architecture, and security architecture
  • Demonstrated expertise in collaborating effectively with risk management functions, including internal and external auditors
  • Experience in defining and operating enterprise architecture governance practices, with a strong enterprise architecture background
  • Proven success and career progression as a technology professional in a large commercial enterprise, preferably within financial services or other highly regulated industries
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in executive presentation and escalation management
  • Strong leadership skills, particularly in influencing others, adapting to various management styles, and navigating different decision-making authorities
  • Ability to work independently as a contributing member in a fast-paced, focused team
  • Ability to work across multiple levels of the organization, from developers to senior leaders
  • Excellent technical, analytical, and project management skills
