Director, Business Strategy & Key Initiatives


The Director of Business Strategy & Key Initiatives is responsible for leading strategy projects and special initiatives within the Investment & Offer Solutions (IOS) organization of the Wealth and Advice Solutions (WAS) enterprise, which is responsible for overall wealth management at Schwab. This role reports to the Managing Director of IOS who is responsible for Schwab’s marketplaces of investment solutions, including Mutual Funds, ETFs, 529 Plan, Separately Managed Accounts, Alternative Investments, Fixed Income, Structure Products, Annuities, and Insurance.

The Director of Business Strategy & Key Initiatives will play a significant role on the IOS leadership team, focused on driving growth strategy projects, providing thought leadership and partnership to the heads of the product lines, supporting the Managing Director with leading a highly effective and engaged organization, and leading critical cross-platform initiatives. 

Key Outcomes:

  • Lead and oversee key strategic projects in collaboration with IOS offer management leaders and the senior leadership team, including:
    • Performing in-depth research such as competitive analyses, field and client interviews, and industry best practices
    • Designing and analyzing options including market sizing, financial modeling, and regulatory and risk assessments
    • Synthesizing complex information, analysis to form clear recommendations
  • Develop compelling content to support the strategy process, deliver recommendations, and present to and influence audiences at various levels across Schwab, including executive leadership across WAS and partner organizations
  • Design and build a data capability that enables Schwab to provide third-party asset managers a robust data package in a scalable, efficient way
  • Manage a group of individual contributors to deliver on team objectives and support individual and team development
  • Monitor Schwab’s business results and plans, IOS results, and the industry to proactively surface potential opportunities and challenges we should address
  • Support IOS organizational communication, collaboration, and team engagement efforts

What you have


Required Experience:

  • 10+ years of total work experience including 3+ years in a business strategy function, preferably in strategy consulting or internal strategy group
  • Strong leadership skills, with a demonstrated ability to develop and manage a high-performing team
  • Experience in designing and implementing data strategy initiatives across various data systems and platforms
  • High financial services acumen and curiosity. Strong understanding of the wealth management market and investment products (e.g., mutual funds, ETFs, separately managed accounts, alternative investments). Prior experience in wealth or asset management strongly preferred
  • Demonstrated ability to analyze complex information and form and express a point of view
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and executive presence. Able to establish trust, influence, and create alignment across an organization
  • Highly resourceful and adaptable with a bias to action
  • Ability to solve problems creatively and respectfully challenge business processes and policies

Preferred Experience: 

  • High degree of comfort dealing with ambiguity in a dynamic and fast paced work environment
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive outcomes in a highly matrixed organization
  • Strong emotional intelligence/maturity
  • Senior level executive presence
  • Superior communication skills, both written and verbal, with demonstrated ability developing materials and effectively presenting to executive audiences
  • Comfortable with debate and willing to challenge the status quo
