Director, Retail Supervision & Risk Management

Retail Supervision and Risk Management (RSRM) is an independent group responsible for providing supervisory support through direct supervision, escalation, oversight, analysis, and supervisory risk assessments, to Schwab’s Investor Services. Retail Supervision and Risk Management’s vision is to be a trusted independent partner of all Schwab stakeholders promotes business growth through effective risk management. We strive to improve business outcomes by providing and applying practical, consistent, effective, and unbiased risk guidance that is grounded in a deep understanding of business goals as well as the regulatory and industry environment.

We are seeking a visionary and results-oriented Director to lead shape, oversee, and drive impactful outcomes across the Retail Supervision & Risk Management (RSRM) Quality Assurance (QA), Learning & Development (L&D), and Control Testing functions.  This role is critical in ensuring that our organization maintains the highest standards of compliance, operational efficiency and effectiveness, and continuous improvement.   The ideal candidate will have a deep understanding of the financial services industry, regulatory requirements and industry best practices, as well as a proven track record of leading and building a high-performing multidisciplinary teams, and delivering consistent high quality results.

Key Responsibilities:

Leadership & Strategic Direction

  • Set a compelling vision and strategic direction for the QA, L&D, and control testing functions.
  • Build and develop a strong leadership bench across functions, fostering a culture of ownership, high performance, and growth
  • Serve as a thought leader and trusted advisor to senior management on quality, training, controls and testing.
  • Design and implement a scalable, efficient, and effective operating model to enhance operational excellence and consistency across all functions.
  • Sets clear direction and expectations for the team, ensuring alignment with enterprise objectives and regulatory requirements.
  • Foster a culture of feedback and continuous improvement, with a commitment to measurable results and accountability.

Operating Model Design & Implementation

  • Architect and implement an integrated, scalable operating model that drives consistency, efficiency, and impact across all covered functions
  • Design frameworks and governance structures to support robust QA processes, effective learning solutions, and control testing program execution
  • Align processes and capabilities to enterprise-wide risk management and control standards
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant regulatory requirements and industry standards

Program Design & Delivery Oversight

  • Lead the design and implementation of each of these programs to strengthen the control environment and drive continuous improvement
  • Oversee the development and delivery of impactful L&D initiatives, ensuring alignment with business goals, regulatory expectations, and control needs
  • Establish quality assurance standards and testing protocols to evaluate the effectiveness of controls and identify areas of remediation
  • Ensure that all programs are designed to meet regulatory requirements and industry standards and best practices

Performance Management & Accountability

  • Set clear, measurable goals and performance expectations across the team, aligned with enterprise objectives
  • Define and implement performance metrics to monitor program delivery and results
  • Monitor and communicate team progress through regular reporting and uses insights to course correct as needed
  • Hold individuals and teams accountable for outcomes, proactively addressing under performance

Executive Presence, Influence & Communication

  • Foster strong partnerships with key stakeholders
  • Demonstrate strong executive presence with ability to confidently and effectively communicate with senior leaders and cross functional partners
  • Present findings, risks, and improvement plans to senior leadership and governance forums
  • Influence outcomes across multiple stakeholders, including business leaders, Compliance, Risk, Audit, etc., by building trust and maintaining strong relationships

What you have


Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • 10+ years of experience in quality assurance, internal controls, learning and development, or related discipline within financial services
  • Proven track record of setting a clear vision, designing efficient and effective operating models, building and leading multidisciplinary teams, and managing large-scale programs.
  • Experience in a leadership role with a compliance or risk management function in a regulated financial services environment.
  • Experience with regulatory bodies such as the SEC, FINRA, and other relevant financial regulatory agencies.
  • Significant experience with broker-dealer and advisory rules and regulations.
  • In-depth knowledge of industry standards, best practices, and regulatory expectations.
  • Strong background in risk management, control testing, and regulatory compliance
  • Demonstrated success in designing and implementing effective operating models that align with regulatory requirements, industry standards and best practices.
  • Exceptional leadership, communication, and influencing skills
  • Demonstrates exceptional organizational skills and the ability to manage multiple teams and priorities with ease.
  • Communicates clearly, concisely, and impactfully, both verbally and in writing, tailored to the audience.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office tools, particularly Excel (data analysis, tracking metrics) and PowerPoint (executive-ready presentations)

Preferred Qualifications

  • Series 7, 9/10, or 24 licenses.
  • Juris Doctor (JD) is a plus.
