In Compliance, we help our business partners achieve their strategic priorities by promoting principles and practices that build client trust and safeguard the integrity of the firm. The Compliance Department advises on applicable federal and state rules and regulations, supervisory systems, and policies and procedures; liaises with regulators; provides guidance on communications with the public; conducts surveillance and investigations to monitor for compliance with firm policies and procedures; processes and maintains firm and employee registrations; and performs a variety of other compliance functions.

In this Individual Contributor role, you will join a team of compliance professionals that collaboratively partner with a variety of internal stakeholders to support the continuing growth of Schwab’s wealth management business. You will focus on: (a) strategic initiatives related to Schwab Wealth Advisory, Inc. (SWAI), a registered investment adviser, and Schwab’s wrap fee programs; (b) providing thought leadership and compliance guidance to senior leaders responsible for SWAI and Schwab’s retail advisor programs; and (c) maintaining and continually evolving the advisory compliance programs for SWAI and Schwab.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Utilize broad and deep knowledge to provide high caliber compliance advice and guidance on a variety of topics associated with Schwab’s wealth management business
  • Influence and strategically guide compliance, regulatory, and business initiatives associated with SWAI and Schwab’s wrap programs, recommending creative solutions that advance the business
  • Execute compliance monitoring activities for adherence to regulatory requirements and internal policies
  • Partner with the advisor Chief Compliance Officers to ensure comprehensive and robust compliance programs for SWAI and Schwab, identifying opportunities for enhancement and increased efficiency
  • Support and participate in internal audits, risk assessments, and relevant regulatory exams
  • Identify, investigate, and assist in the timely resolution of potential compliance issues, including those that are the most complex and ambiguous
  • Interpret and assess laws, rules, and regulations affecting the operation of the wealth management organization
  • Review adviser disclosure documents (e.g. Form ADV) and marketing collateral
  • Contribute to additional projects and tasks based on business needs

What you have


Required Qualifications:

  • 10+ years industry experience, with a minimum of 5 years investment adviser compliance, SEC regulatory experience, or other related experience
  • Excellent knowledge and practical experience with the Investment Advisers Act of 1940 and its implementation within a retail advisory services platform
  • Up to date knowledge of recent regulatory developments, particularly around issues concerning advice for retirement accounts, tax advice, and wrap fee programs
  • Experience interpreting regulatory guidance and assessing compliance risk
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office programs (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, SharePoint)

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree preferred, with post-secondary degree, viewed favorably
  • Investment Adviser Certified Compliance Professional (IACCP®) designation, FINRA Series 65 or 66 licenses a plus
  • Ability to independently identify opportunities for improvement and enhance a Compliance program
  • Established track record of building strong partnerships, driving consensus across cross-functional teams, and influencing decision making
  • Client focus; able to effectively and quickly build relationships and establish trust, respect, competence and confidence.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple, competing initiatives simultaneously
  • Demonstrated proficiency delivering verbal and written communications that are clear, concise, and impactful with their intended audiences
  • Strong emotional intelligence and executive presence
