Enterprise and Operational Risk Management (EORM) is part of the Corporate Risk Management (CRM) department that forms the second line of defense at Charles Schwab. EORM enables The Charles Schwab Corporation’s (CSC) purpose and vision by governing and continually improving enterprise and operational risk programs, including effectively challenging business processes to increase understanding, awareness, and mitigation of enterprise and operational risks and improve related risk-based decision making.

Within EORM, the Enterprise Risk Management Strategy and Governance (ES&G) team manages the Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) Policy and ERM Framework, including other related policies and standards, risk and regulatory learning, and change management; oversight of corporate policies and standards, risk metrics management, top-down and horizontal risk assessments, risk and control self-assessments, issue management, and adverse events escalation; and providing administrative and secretarial support to risk management committees covering operational risk and new products, the Global Risk Committee, Bank Management Risk Committee and Board Risk Committee. 

Reporting to the Director, ES&G, this Senior Manager role will engage with and influence internal stakeholders to develop, implement and continuously enhance Schwab’s Policy Governance Program. The Senior Manager’s core body of work includes, but not limited to, executing the Policy Governance strategy and roadmap, including evolving policy writing, program change management, managing the pipeline of second line of defense policies and standards, technology enhancements, and performing adherence monitoring against the Standard on Corporate Policies and Standards. The successful candidate will do this by partnering with EORM team members and key stakeholders across all lines of defense to execute and implement sound business processes.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Act as a subject matter expert on Risk Governance, including ERM Policy, Standards, and Framework
  • Advance the Policy Governance Program, with focus on program and process improvement, adherence monitoring, effective challenge, training and technology enablement
  • Lead the Policy Governance reviews of policies and standards, as well as identify, evaluate, and bring awareness to themes and trends, contribute to reporting, and support assurance activities (i.e. testing, audits, and regulatory exams)
  • Lead and support strategic, complex, and cross-functional initiatives focused on advancing the Policy Governance program, and drive interconnectivity with other ERM and risk programs
  • Provide thought leadership and partnership internal to the EORM Department and with business partners to support effective execution and evolution of risk management practices
  • Collaborate with risk program owner community and key stakeholders across Schwab to continuously improve and adhere to Policy Governance expectations that effectively and sustainably elevate the program
  • Evaluate the need for and provide the appropriate tools, resources, and guidance to support adherence with program requirements
  • Develop and deliver risk management presentations and communications intended for diverse audiences, including business partners, senior management, internal audit, and regulators
  • Support responses to regulators, internal audit and due diligence inquiries
  • Support the remediation of internally identified and regulatory issues related to EORM
  • Support ad-hoc projects at the guidance of the Director, ES&G

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree or business equivalent
  • 8+ years of professional experience, including 5+ years in financial services and risk management (preferably in a risk, audit, or compliance role)
  • Policy writing experience in developing, socializing, and implementing clear and concise requirements in alignment with risk management objectives
  • Exceptional relationship management and influencing skills at all levels of the organization, with the ability to navigate complex and nuanced business and risk environments, while building trust and balancing diverse organizational priorities
  • Ability to take a broad view of cross-functional perspectives, continuous process improvement, and operational discipline that contribute to sustainable risk programs
  • Outstanding written, verbal, and non-verbal communication skills, including comfort with senior management, regulator, and large audiences
  • Ability to act decisively in making solid, informed, judgement calls in response to programmatic and operational directives, including navigating optimal outcomes when faced with disagreement
  • Strategic thinker who can anticipate the implications and consequences of situations and take appropriate action to be prepared for possible contingencies
  • Display confidence and conviction when discussing body of work, including promoting successes and owning opportunities for improvement
  • A resilient attitude towards adapting to change, a positive mindset, and a focus on long-term goals
  • Self-motivated, able to bring projects to conclusion within established timeframes
  • Proficiency in all Microsoft Office applications, particularly Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and SharePoint

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with Artificial Intelligence tools
