Director, AI & Automation – Financial Crimes Risk Management (FCRM)

About Schwab

We believe that, when done right, investing liberates people to create their own destiny. We champion every client’s goals with passion and integrity, value diversity, and challenge conventions to create value for our clients, our firm, and the world. We live “Own Your Tomorrow” every day, investing in our employees’ strengths and long-term success.

Your Opportunity

Join the Financial Crimes Risk Management (FCRM) team as Director, AI & Automation. You will lead delivery, and lifecycle governance of solutions that protect clients and the firm by accelerating Conduct Risk, AML, and Fraud detection, investigation, and response through Robotic Process Automation (RPA) and Artificial Intelligence (AI). This role owns the RPA and AI roadmaps, operationalization, and risk controls for systems within FCRM—while depending on enterprise data platforms, data owners, and stewards for access, quality, classification, and retention.

You will enable FCRM to build sustainable process improvements in line with FCRM, CRM, and Schwab priorities of keeping costs low and adding value for our clients and stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead a team to improve operational efficiency using RPA and AI.
  • Define and maintain the FCRM AI and automation strategy and multi‑year roadmap across detection, investigations, operations, and risk mitigation.
  • Prioritize use cases against risk impact, feasibility, and regulatory readiness; drive parallel runs and controlled rollouts in concert with 1LOD/2LOD governance.
  • Architect AI solutions (ML models, agentic workflows, orchestration, guardrails) that consume governed data via approved interfaces.
  • Operationalize Schwab’s Responsible AI and AI Risk Management standards within FCRM projects (documentation, explainability, lineage, monitoring, rollback plans).
  • Partner with the SEDA Director to define an AI strategy that aligns with FCRM, CRM, and Schwab priorities, and deliver a roadmap that positions AI as a driver of risk management and operational excellence.
  • Design and execute FCRM’s AI and RPA strategy in collaboration with the SEDA Director, emphasizing risk mitigation, efficiency, and scalability.
  • In coordination with FCRM’s SEDA Director, strengthen foundational capabilities by enhancing data governance, trust, and architecture to support AI-driven automation and improve data discoverability and usability across FCRM.
  • Re-engineer processes using First Principles methodology to embed automation and AI into core workflows for maximum impact.
  • Deploy advanced AI capabilities and automation such as natural language interfaces, pattern recognition across transactions and behaviors, and predictive and generative AI to accelerate investigations, improve reporting, and enable proactive risk detection.
  • Advance automation in Conduct Risk, AML, and Fraud to streamline processes, ensure consistency, and deliver measurable cost savings.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across FCRM, CRM, and Schwab to align automation and AI initiatives with organizational priorities and regulatory expectations.

What You Are Good At

  • Strategic and operational leadership in automation and AI for financial crimes risk management.
  • Change management and process re-design, especially in manual and risk-based environments.
  • Lateral leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Multitasking and prioritizing diverse tasks across Conduct Risk, AML, and Fraud.
  • Providing written and verbal updates to management on strategy, initiatives, and risk concerns.
  • Demonstrating initiative, innovative thinking, and cross-functional collaboration.

What you have

  • Deep understanding of automation, AI, and related processes.
  • Experience leveraging algorithms, machine learning, and AI for financial crimes prevention, detection, and investigation.
  • 10+ years’ experience in risk analytics and automation in financial services.
  • Significant management or supervisory experience.
  • Demonstrated change management, analytical and strategic capabilities.
  • Strong relationship-building and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Effective problem-solving skills with minimal guidance.
  • Effective time management and multitasking skills.
  • Outstanding interpersonal, influencing, and communication skills.
  • BS/BA degree required; advanced/professional degree or securities license(s) a plus.
