The Internal Audit Department (IAD) provides independent and objective assessments to determine whether significant risks are identified and appropriately reported to the Board and Executive Management, evaluate whether risks are adequately controlled, and support governance, risk management, and internal controls through effective challenge of Management.

Within IAD, the Professional Practices Group (PPG) designs and implements processes, training, and tools that support auditors to meet expectations of consistency and quality. The Standards and Training team within PPG is seeking an Internal Audit Senior Manager, Standards and Training to support the department’s ongoing management of IAD’s methodology and procedures. This individual contributor role provides critical support to IAD participating in strategic initiatives, managing key projects, and providing guidance to continually evolve to meet audit quality expectations for a large financial institution.

The successful candidate will bring deep knowledge of risk and control identification and assessment, IIA Standards and related internal audit regulatory requirements, and a strong command of internal audit methodology. The role requires the ability to effectively develop and provide ongoing guidance, training, and support to internal auditors at all experience levels whose key responsibility is evaluating the effectiveness of management’s control environment by assessing the design adequacy and operating effectiveness of the business’ internal controls, much of which are automated controls and controls that rely on system-generated data.

What You’ll Do

  • Manage the process to periodically update IAD’s charter, policy, procedures, templates, and other guidance to strengthen the overall implementation and interpretation of the internal audit methodology and lead efforts for consistent execution throughout the IAD.
  • Regularly collaborate across IAD and manage projects to support change management, including identifying and considering opportunities for continuous improvement, effectively challenging proposed changes to methodology through coordinated efforts with key stakeholders, and supporting development and implementation.
  • Advise auditors at all experience levels on methodology topics, including risk identification and assessment; identification and evaluation of manual, automated, and IT-dependent controls; population evaluation and sampling; issue identification, reporting, and issue validation; and other risk-based approaches and considerations.
  • Write and/or review instructional guidance and self-study materials and develop, organize, and update manuals, guidance documents, and templates to support the understanding of content, knowledge retention, and the successful completion of audit tasks.
  • Develop, maintain, and organize methodology and guidance within SharePoint and the audit management system.
  • Identify methodology training needs for the department by proactively understanding the impacts of changes from procedures, systems, strategic initiatives, etc. and collaborate with others in PPG to develop and deliver effective training.
  • Partner with other key risk management functions in the company to coordinate and align policies, procedures, and certain assurance activities where feasible to support operational efficiencies and effectiveness.
  • Provide leadership and effectively influence colleagues without direct reporting lines.
  • Leverage data analytics, automation, and emerging technologies, including artificial intelligence, to improve the efficiency, consistency, quality, and depth of internal audit activities.

What you have

  • At least seven years of internal audit experience within financial services, public accounting, or a regulatory agency, including at least three years in a management, supervisory, or audit leadership role.
  • Demonstrated experience developing, improving, and training audit methodology.
  • Advanced writing skills with proven experience developing audit procedural content, and reviewing, proofreading, and editing presentations, guidance, and other forms of communications for various audiences.
  • Demonstrated experience assessing risks and controls throughout the audit lifecycle, including risk assessment, audit planning, scoping, control identification, test design and execution, issue identification, reporting, and issue validation.
  • Strong understanding of internal controls and the ability to evaluate control design, implementation, and operating effectiveness, identify control gaps, and determine whether audit evidence supports conclusions.
  • Demonstrated experience evaluating IT-dependent controls, automated controls, and controls that use system-generated information, including assessing relevant application functionality, interfaces, configurations, access controls, change management, data lineage, and completeness and accuracy considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and articulate issues, including the condition, risk, control gap, impact, root cause, compensating controls, rating, and appropriateness of management action plans.
  • Experience reviewing or leading audits that address both business process and supporting technology risks and controls.
  • Strong command of internal audit methodology and deep knowledge of the IIA Global Audit Standards and related regulatory guidance, including FRB SR 13-1 and FRB SR 03-5.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise risk management practices and risk and control self-assessments.
  • Ability to apply independent judgment, professional skepticism, and critical thinking when providing consultations and considering decision impacts to audit quality, risk coverage, control effectiveness, and the overall assurance provided.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, including written and verbal communication skills with demonstrated ability to deliver succinct, impactful messages, provide effective challenge, and influence positive change across all levels.
  • Collaborative mindset that builds authentic and positive relationships with a commitment to continuous learning, knowledge sharing, and guiding others.
  • Ability to be innovative, flexible, and willing to continuously improve and adapt to evolving IAD needs.
