Job Summary

Schwab Retirement Technologies is seeking an experienced Senior Product Owner with deep domain expertise in retirement recordkeeping systems and defined contribution plan administration. This role will apply hands-on knowledge of retirement plan operations, participant transactions, and recordkeeping workflows to shape and deliver digital experiences for retirement plan participants, sponsors, and advisors.

The Product Owner will partner closely with engineering, UX, architecture, and business stakeholders to translate retirement recordkeeping requirements, plan provisions, and participant needs into product priorities, actionable user stories, and acceptance criteria. The successful candidate will understand how recordkeeping data, transaction processing, and plan-specific rules influence participant web and mobile experiences, balancing strategic thinking with execution to deliver accurate, intuitive, and high-value retirement solutions.

What You'll Do

  • Own, prioritize, and maintain the Agile team backlog for retirement participant digital experiences, aligning work to recordkeeping capabilities, participant needs, plan sponsor requirements, and product strategy.
  • Translate retirement plan provisions, recordkeeping workflows, and business rules into user stories and acceptance criteria, including transaction eligibility, data accuracy, processing dependencies, and exception scenarios.
  • Partner with engineers, architects, UX designers, and Scrum Masters to deliver high-quality web and mobile experiences integrated with retirement recordkeeping systems and supporting services.
  • Lead participant web experience management, including plan-specific functionality, account information, and self-service journeys; support participant dashboard modernization and continued enhancement of the participant mobile application.
  • Apply retirement recordkeeping domain knowledge during discovery to identify participant pain points and improvement opportunities across enrollment, contributions, investment elections, loans, distributions, and account servicing.
  • Collaborate with clients, participants, retirement operations, compliance, and vendor partners to validate recordkeeping requirements, gather feedback, and incorporate insights into product decisions.
  • Lead backlog refinement, sprint planning, and other Agile ceremonies while helping ensure predictable delivery and strong backlog health.
  • Monitor participant digital product performance and recordkeeping-related servicing issues to identify enhancements that improve transaction clarity, self-service completion, and the overall participant experience.

What you have

Required Qualifications

  • 7+ years of Product Owner, Product Management, Business Analysis, or related Agile delivery experience, including substantial hands-on experience with retirement recordkeeping systems and defined contribution retirement plans.
  • Proven experience managing and prioritizing product backlogs in Agile environments, accounting for retirement recordkeeping dependencies, operational needs, and participant impact.
  • Strong user story writing, requirements gathering, and backlog refinement skills, with demonstrated ability to translate retirement plan rules and recordkeeping processes into testable requirements.
  • Experience delivering participant-facing retirement web or mobile applications, with an understanding of how recordkeeping data, plan configuration, and transaction processing shape the digital experience.
  • Demonstrated ability to balance strategic roadmap planning with day-to-day execution responsibilities.
  • Experience partnering closely with software engineers, architects, UX professionals, and QA teams throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Strong communication and relationship-building skills with the ability to influence decisions without direct authority.
  • Experience working in cross-functional environments where collaboration, ownership, and customer focus are critical to success.
  • Strong working knowledge of defined contribution plan administration and core recordkeeping functions, including eligibility and enrollment, contribution sources, vesting, investment elections, loans, and distributions, and the ability to translate that knowledge into participant-focused product outcomes.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working directly for a retirement recordkeeper, third-party administrator, or retirement technology provider, supporting recordkeeping platforms and related operational workflows.
  • Advanced knowledge of 401(k) administration, plan-specific configuration, and regulatory requirements affecting retirement recordkeeping and participant transactions.
  • Experience managing retirement participant web experiences, including plan-level feature availability, participant communications, and end-to-end self-service transaction journeys.
  • Experience working with mobile applications and responsive web platforms.
  • Familiarity with Agile frameworks such as SAFe and participation in PI Planning activities.
  • Experience collaborating with third-party vendors and external technology partners on integrations with retirement recordkeeping systems and participant-facing services.
  • Understanding of customer journey mapping, digital experience design, and usability best practices.
  • Experience using tools such as Jira, Confluence, Rally, and Figma.
  • Demonstrated success owning retirement recordkeeping or participant digital products through modernization, transformation, or digital enhancement initiatives.
