You’ll join the Advisor Services Database Team, a collaborative group of engineers and technology leaders responsible for shaping database strategy that supports Schwab’s growing advisor business. This is a hands-on role where curiosity, continuous learning, and shared ownership are valued. As a Specialist, Database Engineer, you’ll partner closely with application and infrastructure teams to design, build, and support enterprise database solutions. Your work will help modernize platforms, improve performance, and ensure the reliability of systems used by advisors every day.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support end-to-end database delivery for multiple Agile development teams.
  • Design, develop, and support enterprise database solutions across Oracle and SQL Server environments.
  • Participate in database lifecycle activities, including provisioning, patching, upgrades, migrations, and decommissioning.
  • Write and maintain database objects such as queries, views, stored procedures, and triggers.
  • Monitor database performance and implement tuning strategies to improve stability and scalability.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve production database issues, including participation in a 24/7 on-call rotation including weekends.
  • Contribute to automation efforts that reduce manual work and improve reliability using AI.
  • Support database migration and optimization initiatives as part of consolidation and technology modernization efforts.
  • Create and maintain clear, accurate documentation to support operational excellence.
  • Collaborate with teammates, train associates as needed, and contribute to a culture of knowledge sharing and continuous improvement.

To ensure that we fulfill our promise of “challenging the status quo,” this role has specific qualifications that successful candidates should have:

Required Qualifications:

  • 1–3 years of hands-on experience supporting Oracle and SQL Server database operations in enterprise environments.
  • Hands-on experience using Oracle Enterprise Manager (OEM) or Foglight.
  • Willingness to work on weekends and night shifts / US timing on a rotational basis.
  • Working knowledge of database development concepts, including performance tuning and optimization.
  • Experience supporting database activities related to backup, monitoring, alerting, security compliance, and patching.
  • Familiarity with DevOps practices and tools such as GitHub, Bamboo, and Bitbucket.
  • Experience working with collaboration and work management tools such as Microsoft Teams, Jira, Confluence, and service management platforms.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, respond effectively during production issues, and deliver results in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting skills with attention to detail.
  • Ability to create clear, well-organized technical documentation.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working with PostgreSQL. Is a plus
  • Exposure to automation tools or AI-assisted solutions (such as Copilot) to streamline operational tasks.
  • Comfort learning new technologies and adapting to evolving platforms.
  • Experience working in Agile or fast-paced team environments.
  • A genuine interest in databases, data platforms, and helping others succeed.
  • Unix commands for file manipulating is a plus
