Director, Investment Management Operations Technology

Schwab Asset Management (SAM) Technology is an organization within Schwab Technology Services aligned to support the technology needs of Schwab Asset Management (SAM), Wealth & Advice Solutions (WAS), and the Schwab Center for Financial Research (SCFR) and Third-Party platform teams.  Sam Technology is an organization dedicated to supporting SAM’s Investment, Operational and Data platforms and teams that provide Production Support, Architecture, and Infrastructure needs.  

The Director of Investment Management Operations Technology reports to the Managing Director and Head of SAM Technology and is integral to the evolution and delivery of efficient, modern operational processes across the entire SAM portfolio. 

The Director of Investment Management Operations Technology is a senior leadership role responsible for the strategy, delivery, and day-to-day operational integrity of technology platforms spanning the full investment operations lifecycle. The role encompasses middle office functions as well as back-office capabilities including fund accounting, portfolio accounting, performance measurement, risk measurement, NAV calculation, client / regulatory reporting, fee billing and custodian/administrator technology relationships and an expanding AI & Automation mandate covering machine learning operations, generative AI deployment, and intelligent process automation across all investment operations functions.

This individual serves as the primary technology owner for a complex, multi-vendor ecosystem that includes platforms from BlackRock, Vestmark, State Street, SS&C Technologies, and other leading providers. They will partner with investment operations, finance, risk, compliance, and front office technology to ensure these platforms are stable, scalable, and continuously aligned to the firm’s evolving business needs.

The successful candidate will combine deep domain expertise across middle and back office workflows with both strategic vision and hands-on technical credibility in applied AI—capable of evaluating AI vendor claims, guiding ML engineering teams, and translating AI capabilities into measurable operational outcomes.

Key Functional Responsibilities:

Trade & Order Management Systems

  • Oversee STP (straight-through processing) rates, trade exception management, and end-of-day reconciliation between order management and downstream accounting systems.
  • Drive integration of new asset classes, funds, and trading strategies into OMS/PMS infrastructure.

Portfolio Management & Risk Analytics

  • Manage platforms supporting real-time portfolio construction, compliance monitoring, and pre-trade/post-trade risk analytics
  • Partner with risk and portfolio management teams to enhance exposure reporting, factor analytics, and scenario analysis capabilities.

Data Management & Integration

  • Drive data quality governance initiatives; establish controls and KPIs for data accuracy, completeness, and timeliness across middle office systems.
  • Partner with data engineering teams on cloud data platforms (Snowflake, Databricks) to modernize data pipelines supporting middle office workflows.

Fund & Portfolio Accounting

  • Own the technology strategy and operations for fund accounting and ABOR platforms; ensure accurate NAV calculation and timely book close processes.
  • Oversee multi-currency accounting, complex instrument pricing, and corporate actions processing across mutual funds, separate accounts, and alternative investment vehicles.
  • Partner with fund finance and controllers to ensure accounting system outputs meet GAAP/IFRS requirements and support audit processes.
  • Manage custodian and fund administrator technology interfaces drive reconciliation of positions, cash, and NAV across all counterparties.

Performance Measurement & Attribution

  • Oversee performance measurement and attribution platforms; ensure GIPS-compliant composite construction, return calculation, and attribution reporting.
  • Partner with investment analytics and client reporting teams to deliver accurate and timely performance data for internal and external stakeholders.
  • Drive automation of performance reporting workflows; reduce manual processes and improve time-to-delivery for client-facing performance reports.
  • Maintain and enhance benchmark management capabilities; ensure alignment of benchmark data across accounting, risk, and reporting platforms.

Client Reporting & Investor Portals

  • Own the technology infrastructure supporting client and investor reporting, including customized performance reports, account statements, and regulatory disclosures.
  • Partner with client services and relationship management teams to enhance digital reporting capabilities and investor portal functionality.

Key Leadership Responsibilities:

Technology Strategy & Vendor Management

  • Define and execute the multi-year technology roadmap for middle and back office platforms, balancing strategic innovation with operational stability.
  • Own vendor relationships with BlackRock, Vestmark, State Street, SS&C Technologies, and other key platform providers; lead contract negotiations, SLA management, and escalation resolution.
  • Evaluate platform consolidation opportunities; reduce operational complexity and total cost of ownership across the vendor ecosystem.
  • Establish and enforce technology governance standards including change management, release management, and architectural review.

Operations & Service Delivery

  • Define and monitor SLAs, KPIs, and operational metrics for system uptime, processing throughput, and incident resolution across all platforms.
  • Own critical incident management and escalation; ensure timely root cause analysis, remediation, and post-incident review.
  • Oversee end-of-day, end-of-month, and end-of-year processing cycles across accounting, performance, and reporting platforms.

Program Delivery & Transformation

  • Lead large-scale technology transformation programs including platform migrations, cloud modernization, and regulatory-driven enhancements
  • Drive Agile/Scrum delivery practices; ensure consistent roadmap execution, stakeholder alignment, and transparent reporting to governance committees.
  • Oversee integration of acquired entities, new business lines, and new asset classes into existing middle and back-office infrastructure.

People Leadership

  • Lead, mentor, and develop a team of technology managers, business analysts, and operations specialists across middle and back office functions
  • Foster a culture of accountability, continuous improvement, and cross-functional collaboration; manage talent pipeline and succession planning.
  • Partner with HR and recruiting to attract, develop, and retain top-tier technology and operations talent.

Risk, Controls & Compliance

  • Ensure all platforms comply with applicable regulatory requirements (SEC, CFTC, FINRA, and global equivalents); manage technology risk assessments and audit remediation.
  • Maintain and enhance BCP/DR capabilities for all critical middle and back office systems; conduct periodic testing and recovery exercises.
  • Drive data governance and data quality initiatives across the platform ecosystem; partner with compliance and internal audit on control testing.

What you have


Required

  • 15+ years of progressive experience in technology and operations within asset management, investment banking, or related financial services; with significant exposure to both middle and back office functions.
  • 7+ years of people leadership, including management of managers and teams of 50+ individuals across multiple functional areas.
  • Demonstrated expertise across the investment operations lifecycle: trade management, portfolio accounting, performance measurement, regulatory reporting, and client reporting.
  • Hands-on experience with two or more of the following platforms: BlackRock Aladdin, Vestmark, State Street Alpha, SS&C Geneva/Advent, SimCorp, Charles River, Eagle Investment Systems, Bloomberg AIM, , or FactSet.
  • Proven track record managing complex, multi-vendor technology environments and large-scale vendor contracts ($10M+).
  • Experience delivering large-scale technology programs ($5M–$20M+ budgets) on time and within scope in an Agile environment.
  • Deep knowledge of accounting standards (GAAP/IFRS), performance measurement (GIPS), and regulatory reporting frameworks relevant to asset management.
  • Meaningful exposure to applied AI or ML in a production financial services environment—either as a sponsor, product owner, or hands-on technical contributor; ability to engage credibly with data scientists and ML engineers.
  • Familiarity with AI governance frameworks, model risk management principles (SR 11-7), and responsible AI practices including bias monitoring, explainability, and human-in-the-loop design.
  • Strong understanding of multi-asset class instrument types including equities, fixed income, derivatives (listed and OTC), alternatives, and real assets.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Finance, Engineering, or a related field; or equivalent practical experience.

Preferred

  • MBA or Master’s degree in a relevant discipline.
  • CFA, FRM, CAIA, or PMP certification is a plus.
  • Experience with front-to-back operating model transformations (e.g., State Street Alpha, Aladdin end-to-end implementations).
  • Experience with cloud migration of financial data and application platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP); familiarity with Snowflake, Databricks, or similar data platforms.
  • Knowledge of IBOR/ABOR convergence frameworks and investment data management best practices.
  • Experience leading teams through SEC, CFTC, or internal audit examinations of technology and operations.
  • Exposure to alternatives administration platforms (Advent Geneva for hedge funds, Yardi, MRI, or similar for real assets).
