ERG Spotlight: Military Veterans Network.

By: Beau H., Sr Content Manager

Building community, serving together

At Charles Schwab, employee resource groups (ERGs) are more than communities — they’re open to all employees and help our people connect around shared experiences, passions, and values. One of these groups is our Military Veterans Network (MVN), which supports Schwabbies who have served in the armed forces, military spouses and partners, military families, and anyone who wants to honor and advance the military community at Schwab.

The MVN ERG recognizes the skills and sacrifices of veterans and their families while creating an environment where they can thrive in corporate life. It emphasizes connection, service, and leadership, bringing the mission-first mindset of military life into the workplace. Whether someone is navigating the transition from military service or simply wants to support their colleagues, MVN provides a trusted space to share experiences, build networks, and grow together.

As one member reflected:

Why the MVN matters at Schwab

Veterans bring unique strengths to the workplace. Discipline, resilience, teamwork, adaptability, and a focus on service are qualities honed in the military that translate seamlessly into financial services. The MVN helps highlight and nurture these strengths, creating opportunities for veterans to thrive while also enriching Schwab’s culture.

The network also provides a sense of continuity. Many veterans miss the camaraderie and unity of their service experience once they leave the military full-time. Within the MVN ERG, they discover that same spirit of connection — a group of colleagues who understand the language of service and who bring that commitment into their professional lives.

As one participant put it: “We carry forward the camaraderie that’s so familiar in the military. Here, it becomes a source of strength for colleagues and clients alike.”

Stories of impact

Every member of the MVN ERG has their own story, but many share common threads of transition, discovery, and growth.

For some, the network has been a lifeline during their early days at Schwab. One veteran shared:

For others, the MVN ERG has served as the bridge between military service and client-facing work. Another employee explained: “In the military, it was about protecting and serving. At Schwab, I found a similar sense of purpose — serving clients, protecting their financial futures. The MVN reinforced that connection for me.”

And MVN isn’t only for veterans. Spouses, allies, and current Schwabbies are all vital to its impact. One Schwabbie shared: “I never served, but I wanted to support colleagues who did. MVN gave me a way to show up, learn more about military life, and help celebrate their contributions.”

MVN in action

The MVN is about more than connection — it’s about action. Members regularly give their time and energy to projects that make a tangible difference both inside and outside of Schwab.

Volunteerism

During Schwab Volunteer Week and beyond, MVN chapters often focus on serving veterans in the community. Members have taken part in events that provide resources for those facing homelessness, delivered meals to veterans and their families, and helped organize donation drives for those in need.

As one volunteer described it: “When you look a fellow veteran in the eye and remind them they’re not forgotten, it reinforces why this work matters.”

Wellness and resilience

The MVN ERG also champions wellness. In collaboration with other ERGs, members have promoted challenges and activities designed to encourage employees to care for their physical, emotional, and mental health.

A participant explained: “Wellness is universal. Whether you’re a veteran adjusting to civilian life or just balancing work and family, the reminder to care for yourself is powerful.”

Honoring service

MVN chapters also lead the way in honoring military service throughout the year. Around Memorial Day and Veterans Day, they create moments for employees to pause, reflect, and express gratitude.

One member noted: “It’s about pausing to remember and to thank — as colleagues, as citizens, as people whose freedoms were secured by those who served.”

Leadership and growth

The MVN ERG is employee-led, and that leadership is a powerful part of its impact. Each chapter has individuals who step into roles as co-chairs, coordinators, and organizers. Their responsibilities include guiding programming, building engagement, and representing the network in broader company forums.

For those who take on leadership roles in the MVN ERG, the experience often becomes a turning point in their careers. As one leader explained: “MVN has been as much about my own growth as it has been about giving back. Leading a chapter taught me skills I use every day in my client work and in my career path.”

The MVN also creates visibility for emerging leaders. Employees who might not otherwise have opportunities to showcase their strengths find a platform here — one where they can shape culture, influence strategy, and help drive meaningful change.

Recognition from within

The impact of the MVN ERG is often most visible in the stories members share with one another. Recognition doesn’t always come in the form of awards or accolades. More often, it’s reflected in the quiet but powerful moments when someone says they felt supported, understood, and valued.

As one member described it: “When a veteran tells me they stayed at Schwab because they felt seen and supported, that’s recognition enough.”

What MVN represents

The Military Veterans Network embodies Schwab’s larger values:

  • Own your future, together: helping veterans and spouses build careers, not just jobs.
  • Through clients’ eyes: channeling a service mindset from the battlefield to a conference room.
  • Stronger community, stronger company: weaving veteran experiences into the fabric of Schwab’s culture.

Join our team

For veterans considering their next career step, or for allies who want to support them, MVN is both a resource and a reminder that service doesn’t stop when the uniform comes off. As one member summed it up, “The network is a family — and like any family, it’s about showing up, leaning in, and moving forward together.”

If you want to do meaningful work, develop new skills, and chart your own path, then Schwab is the place for you. Check out our current roles that are built for people who want to grow, and know that we’re here to support you every step of the way.
